Off to Egypt!....just kidding

So, the plan was to take a 5 day vacation while Paul's parents were out here and go to Egypt.  We had our plane tickets to Cairo and another set for a day trip to Abu Simbel, hotel booked, guide book at hand, and even a taxi driver's name & number.

But, apparently the oppressed in Egypt were ready to fight back--good for them, not so much for our trip.  The unrest started about three weeks before we were supposed to fly out, so we didn't make any quick decisions, but decided to see how it played out for a week or two before we canceled.  We waited, and waited.  I talked with one of my coworkers who is Egyptian and grew up in Cairo.  When she told me that she had a trip planned to go back around the same time to go see her family but that she had just canceled it, I decided it probably wouldn't be a great idea for us to go.

Anyways, that's how we ended up in Thailand which hopefully I will post about in the next few days.

For anyone who's wondering how the unrest all over the Middle East is affecting us, I would say that this blog post from a few weeks ago written by a fellow Abu Dhabi expat sums up Paul's and my feelings pretty well.  Basically, we're not too worried about it as the UAE is very stable, but we do keep an eye on things...and yes, mom & dad, we are registered with the Embassy :)

Also, my mom sent these two infographics from the local newspaper back home which you might find interesting.
